Iván Argote’s (b. 1983, Bogotá) A Point of View creates a sculptural lookout on the shores of the Salton Sea. Presented by Desert X, Argote’s installation gives its audience an opportunity to witness California’s largest and most endangered lake from six perspectives. The set of concrete staircases are each topped with a platform at the top to draw attention to an ecological disaster that poses urgent health risks in the Coachella Valley. Writing set in concrete in Spanish and English appears on each step. Seemingly leading nowhere, each staircase shows the opportunities for communities to work together and see things from one another’s perspective. It is a powerful sight to behold.
